Old pictures..............

Oh some treasures, the boxes of pictures that I have been going through, in one is my great grandmothers collection of postcards from the early 1900's, I love these old photos, and most of them have postcards on the back, I guess that was how they sent news back then, look at us now. The horseshoe one above was the only one out of hundreds that was even remotely horse related, at least its Christmasy.

This I think is my great grandfather, probably with a prized pony!

This photo just made me think of how hard it was in those days, you can see the fly net on the horse I dont know who is in this photo it may be great great grandparents.

These three pics are from a county fair, it says Del Norte fair 1913 first says pony race, second says potato race and the third says quick hitch, which I am assuming was another race of some sort.

It amazes me how different life was, when we depended on horses for transportation, and the vet care was so crude, no wormers, no antibiotics, except maybe penicillin, if they gave it to animals back then. Our horses are starting to live into their 30's or more sometimes now, what was the life span back then 15-20 was probably really old. We have a lot of medical breakthroughs to be thankful for now, I cant imagine dealing with worms and injury's back then. Horses sure are a lot healthier now.

Dusty Lady...... is what Mom named her

Dusty was the first foal that I seen born, I was eight years old. She was also the first horse that I trained to ride, when I was ten. I had a lot of good times with this little mare. Unfortunately as a two year old she was injured on a metal feeder and severed some tendons in her right hind fetlock. Dad was a horseshoer and did all he knew how to help her. Dispite her injury she lived a long and productive life we used her for everything trail riding, 4-H, rodeo court. She was a willing and good little bulldog grade Quarter Horse, and was small at 14.2, but big in heart. She bucked me off a few times when I was starting her.

Baby Dusty lady, 1975.
Dusty was two and I was ten when I started riding her, this was before she got hurt. Even with her fetlock rocking back a little she was sound and not in pain, Dad took her hunting and trail riding and she never limped at all.
I showed her in 4-H and she was good,( I on the other hand needed work LOL ) below you can see me asking her to set up.

She had quite unusual markings on her legs, the right hind was black, the left was white with a great big spot on the front, and she had socks on the front with black freckles all along the corronet. She was a beautiful dapple buckskin, butter milk, as she had white fringe on her mane and tail, no line on her back, and no dun factor markings. She was out of Moms mare Silkey and a buckskin QH stud named Dusty Work, he was of Yucca King breeding also, like Joe. Unfortunately the man who owned him when Silkey was bred sold him and a few years later he was starved to death, they tried to save him, but it was to late.
Will post some more.......

Fern Valley http://fernvalley01.blogspot.com/
I believe really touched me

Thanks everyone, I have been having a blast with this blog thing, and feel like I have met a lot of really cool people!!!

Luxor will live!!!!

LOL, the vet wasnt real concerned about the hives, unless it becomes a recurring thing. She gave us some cortisone pills to give him. So he will live and is HAPPILY chewing on his new bone we got him at Wilco today. We had the best experience at the Vet. This is a new vet for us and we have never had friendlier more caring people take care of our pets before. All over the walls were framed collages of patients and framed pics of dogs and cats and horses and pigs and cows and goats and sheep, you name it, it was really neat. I have had one of the docs out but had never taken anyone to their clinic.

CHOCOLATE!! and Luxor has to go to the VET!

Meghan and I spent the day yesterday making CHOCOLATE candies, decorating and pouring chocolate into molds, it was fun, and a lot of work. We went through, two packs of candie quik chocolate and one of almond bark, we still have lots of red and green left. We are trying this thing with candy canes, poring the choc. over them in the mold. I hope it works ok, I like it so much more than pretzels. We could not find any straight pretzels at Wallyworld. I am just worried about the candy canes getting sticky, we are wrapping them in plastic.

........................................................................................
And POOR LUXOR! He started breaking out in hives on Sat. morning his nose seemed swollen, but only in one spot, Sunday though, oh poor baby you can see from the pics that he has a lot of hives! I like the one right between his eyes LOL oh sorry Luxor we dont mean to laugh at you LOL We have been in contact with the leader of the Guide Dogs group and she said to give him some benedryl, so Sun. we gave him some every 4 hours, helps a little but not completely, so gave him one more this morning and called the Vet, we have a 2:00pm appt. hopefully they can give him something better. There has been no food change and he was home all weekend, he did go out to the barn with Meg Sat morning, we think he may have been bitten by a spider or something? Doesnt he look miserable, his lips keep breaking out with nickle size welts and they run all the way down his shoulders, no problems breathing or anything, or I would have him right to emergency. Its just strange, I have never had a dog thats gotten hives before.

My Christmas year round collection, or er... part of it

I have a rather eclectic collection of ornaments, I am pretty picky about which ones I choose to add to my collection, and a lot of them stay out all year. Santa's, bears, snowmen, gnomes, all fishing and hunting. I have fun at Christmas time combing the ornament racks, much to my husbands dismay LOL

This is one of my favorites, pull the fish at the bottom and the bears legs move.

Fat bears skinny bears, but they all have to have...... something that "speaks" to me, I know kinda weird huh.

gnomes, bigger and smaller, as long as they are holding a fishing pole.

And these guys are some of my very favorites, fishing bear, hunting bear, and duck hunt bear. The hunting ones are the hardest to find, there are usually a lot of fishing ones. Now maybe this post will get me in the Christmas mood, and now we can tear apart the living room and make room for the tree, and I will show you a few more of my ornaments, I have horse ones too, on the tree. And oh do I need to dust, LOL found a bit while I was looking at all these LOL

Meg, Easy and Parelli

This is one of my favorite pictures of Meghan and Easy. We were up at a friends practicing Parelli, and I managed to catch this shot of them.

All of our horses have been relay good with the ball, hasnt taken long to get it near them. Thats my great big trailer in the background.

This is at our beautiful fairgrounds in the Columbia gorge, looking east, the lighting was perfect at that moment, the background beautiful, at the base of those hills is the Columbia river. Doesnt the light look like a spotlight? Meg and her friend Carissa did several Parelli demos in 2005, at horsecamp and at the fair.(with Pats' blessing they did ask permission, at a tour stop in Albany OR) There was a lot of learning and a lot of time put into it, and a lot of fun. The old mare absolutely thrives on Parelli, she is a right brain introvert/extrovert.

Such a beautiful expression.
I will say again that Parelli has given us a lot of answers and help we didnt have before, I just wish it all wasnt so damn expensive............hmmm I guess we all have to make a living.

My first award! my first award! my first award!

LOL Karen over at, Life at the rough string, http://jksroughstring.blogspot.com/ me my first award LOL Thanks! Karen. I still have a lot to learn about how to post but I will figure it out eventually. It has been a bit of a learning curve for me, I need to use help more LOL. I can post links but not links with just the name..... I'll get it eventually! It is a lot of fun. Oh and my stupidly long name was a google blunder when I started this blog, havnt figured out if I am stuck with it, Reddunappy is what it is susposed to be, I have to learn not the click so quick.

MRI day

I had my MRI today, it went surprisingly well, no problem with the anesthsia. Now I have to wait until I see my neurologist to get the results, Jan 12th.

.........more pictures of Joe.

This is my mom and Joe, he was around 2 in this picture, Mom did all the ground work, and early riding with him. It is a good picture of both of them.

I thought Mom and I looked a lot alike in these two pictures, LOL to be young and skinny again!!

You can see how buckskin light he used to get on his back, people used to always ask us if he was an Arab because he had a pretty dished face. Pretty boy, I miss this horse, he would do anything I asked of him. He ended up getting cancer, lympho sarcoma, nodules all over him, dad had the horsetrader take him to the auction. He was around 18 or so. Thats hard but at the time it was also an economic thing. I rode him for a lot of years in 4-H and game shows, when we were really actively riding.
My next horse is Dusty, the first I saw born and the first I trained myself.

History......and horses

That is, my history and my horses, and my dad..................
This is my dad, he went to farrier school and shod horses for 4-5 years I think. Then he got into laying carpet and vinyl and Mom and him opened a floor covering store that they had for 28 years, they just closed the store this year, Dad is still installing though.

Dad was a horseshoer, one day I wanted to ride Joe and his feet were to long so I got the bright idea I would file down his feet so I could ride him, I had watched dad do it for years so maybe I could do it. I believe I was 12 or 13 when I got this bright idea LOL. Well Dad caught me, and thats all she wrote, he taught me after that to trim the horses and I have been doing it ever since. I wont nail a shoe on, I dont think I want to nail, although I probably could have at one time, now I would just rather pay "horseshoer Dave" to do this, writing a check is a lot easier LOL. I still trim them and even have since my surgery, it takes a long time but I can!

...............................................................................................................................................................

In 1990 I got invited by a friend to ride her horse in a 25 mile endurance race. So I thought I would try it. It was a blast, that is me on the dark grey, his name was Magic. He was a beautiful example of the Arab breed, nice conformation, his disposition was good but he was a stud until he was 6 or 7, he was gelded before my friend bought him. That being said he was a little nippy sometimes but not bad. When my friend and her husband went to look at him the owner already had him saddled and head tied down etc. Well to my friends husbands credit he would not ride the horse or handle him until they took all the crap off of him, and it went well, they obviously bought him.

This race was down east of Bend OR. I want to say Mustang Ridge, but its been so long I dont remember. We had a good ride, we rode together the whole time, we had been conditioning the horses 3-4 times a week. Let me tell you following little pink ribbons through the sagebrush isnt easy LOL. I remember our first water stop at a big cattle trough. My friend freaked out cuz I splashed water on Magics neck and chest, I now know that that is ok, but it was her horse so I didnt do it again.

We followed these little pink ribbons and came to another water stop and could see some confusion as to where the trail went, we could see other riders up on the ridge, but that looked like the wrong way to us. So we go the way we thought was marked and after about 3 1/2 hrs we came to the finish line, there was only one horse in front of us, we couldnt believe that we had come in 2nd and 3rd! Magics heart rate didnt come down right away cuz there were other horses coming in so I ended up finishing 5th after all his vitals came down. But for my first ride that was pretty damn good I thought! Oh and the little pink ribbons, we went the right way, a whole group of 12-15 riders went the wrong way and took another 1/2 hour to come in when they normally would have been in front of us, isnt reading the trail part of the game? LOL It was a blast doing the endurance ride, I would have loved to do it again when I was younger.

As for Magic, my friends husband rode him in another race a month or so later and over rode him and he tied up pretty bad, wasnt pretty he couldnt walk for a few days dark, dark urine, poor baby. Then my friend and her husband divorced and she had the horses boarded somewhere and the asshats turned Magic out with his halter on, thats not the bad part, there was an old bathtub being used as a water trough, thats all fine and good but the asshats didnt take the faucet off of the tub and Magic got his halter caught in it, reared back with it hooked to his halter, and severely damaged his knees, I dont know what happened after that, such a waste of a beautiful animal.

..............................................................................................................................................................

How come it always seems there are no pictures of me, oh thats cuz I am the one taking them, LOL
This is the two fat girls LOL Me and Emma when she was probably 4 yrs old. I was going to start her when she was 2 1/2-3, but in Sept of 2002 I was hit head on by a drunk driver, I was in the hospital for 11 days and have a lot of titanium on my left side now. The doc left me in a wheelchair and walker for 3 months, no casts or anything, modern medicine. So Emma didnt get started when I wanted to, which in the long run wasnt a bad thing for her, she was plenty developed as a two year old, she was an 800lb yearling!, yes halter bred but she is only 14.3, a midget LOL, it gave her time to develop mentally, which was good for her. She was the easiest horse to train to ride that I have ever had. (The third one I have trained since day one under saddle.) I originally bought Emma for my youngest daughter but she has ended up being mine, LOL Meghan and her are to much alike LOL. Meghan says she doesnt get along with her very good. Oh darn, I get her LOL I love her she is so mellow and now that I have been disabled she puts up with my bumbling around and running into her without a flinch, which is more than I can say for the old mares, and at 9 years old on Jan 10th she will only get better! I fell in love with Emma When a lady came into the feed store I was working at and was sharing pictures of her new foals. We became friends and little did I know that 2 yrs later I would buy Emma from her. She gave me a baby book of pics and everything. Wasnt she a cute baby! And next is Emma at 11 months, you can see the frosting starting on her hips, she was, and is still a big girl. But not to tall, I like that LOL and she still fits in the trailer, at least mine, we went to a QH Show, with a friend, just for the experience down in Redmond OR in 2005 and she had such a bad butt bruise from my friends trailer (it was a 31/2 hr haul )that I hate to haul her with anyone else, she did the same thing in another trailer, but at least it wasnt as long of a ride. I have hauled her for long trips in my trailer and she doesnt do it so I try to only put her in mine. I have a circle J 4 horse with dress room, and it has adjustable width stalls so we can set it wide for her, she sits on the back wall, I think cuz she is so long and in order to rest her neck she has to sit back. I say again she is only 14.3 and wears an 84 blanket. LOL
Well thats a little more of my history.
Thanks for reading.

My favorite horse as a kid, Joe.

This is my mom on Joe, when he was probably 3 or 4, she did all the ground work and beginning riding on him before I started riding him. He was a pretty good boy, the only problem I remember him having is occasionally he would pull when tied, and at one point he had a rearing problem that quit when I taught him to rear on cue. He was a registered QH, one bloodline was Yucca King, and he was registered as brown, but he really was a really dark buckskin, he had a black line down his back and got lighter every year.

LOL I wish someone had taught me posture LOL if I only knew then what I know now LOL, Joe did really well for me in 4-H, we did well in west eq and in trail class. He was a great trail class horse, awesome with the gate and always tried anything I asked of him.

Oh the preparations before class. Had to have the chaps just right. There is my friend Patti on the left and Mary on the right.

Remember running Scurries in game shows? they dont run them anymore cuz somewhere along the line they became to dangerous, but they sure were fun! Three jumps and around the barrel and three more jumps home.

This looks like it was probably what we called the figure 8 back then, its called something else now.

And my all time favorite event, we always placed good, the keyhole, or key race as it is called now.
Will post a few more soon.
